2011_Straw Pavillion Installation - Accumuation Type 1

Project: Installation - Accumulation Type 1
Design: Seuk Hoon Kim
Construction: Seuk Hoon Kim, Hanyang Univ. Department of Interior Design (HYID)
Type: Pavilion Installation

‘Usual Place being Unusual’

The places where they once use to have special meanings can turn into usual places, because they become too much familiar. Places can just turn into spots for people to pass by. I have wanted to show by placing an unusual art object in a place, people can recognize the spot in a different point of view. With the simple meaning of accumulation made with 34,000 plastic straws, people not just pass by, but also can have unique experiences and activities at the place. By opening possibilities for various interactions, each individuals staying at the place will give each their own meanings through the installation, and the place will not be seen as it was before.

Type 1 has been installed during HYID Festival in May 2011. This straw pavilion, installed on outdoor stage, is designed to show formation of accumulation of straws in vertical axis. Six columns are connected to the center column in an arch form. The installation enables people to feel the new formed space around them. In the center column, lightings are set to light during the night so that people can enjoy party and activities inside the pavilion.
